There is something so beautiful about film. The way it captures a moment. The way it makes you slow down. Makes you really think. Forces you to be deliberate. There is no redo. There is no pulling the camera away to check the screen and see what you got (though I do this at least once every time I shoot film – looking ridiculous as I look at the back of a camera with nothing there 🙂 ). And the anticipation as you wait for your film scans to come back from the lab harkens back to being a child and looking forward to a birthday or Christmas. This makes it that much more fun!
I purchased a used Canon EOS 3 to become re-acquainted with film,  shooting Fuji Pro 400H 35mm film and Fujichrome Provia 400x 35mm color slide film for fun. One of the things I love the most about this camera is that I can use all of my Canon lenses with it! All of the images above were taken with this camera and these two film types. It’s so much fun to be inspired by film and to see it influence my digital work. I think it’s a great exercise as a digital photographer, because it forces me to think differently. I have been falling in love with film for some time now and pining for a Contax 645 medium format camera…watching some of my favorites (one, two, three) share beautiful film image that give such dreamy, creamy tones and make me want to live in their images. And because I am a person who likes to go all in (and because why not tackle medium format in Paris!?!!) I recently decided to make that jump and can not wait to see what I capture with my Contax while we are visiting France. There is definitely a learning curve with film – it’s going to take lots of practice focusing on getting really comfortable with the relationship between film and light, film types, my light meter, and the like – but I am so excited to explore and dive head first into an art that is so beautiful!
Thanks to Indie FIlm Lab for my lovely film scans and for being so great to work with!
